Fortune: Only Freddie Roach Knows how to Beat Mayweather

By Raj Parmar: Manny Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune believes trainer Freddie Roach is going to be the difference maker on May 2 when Manny steps into the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. After going through a few weeks in training camp alongside both Roach and Pacquiao, Justin is convinced that Manny is certain to win the fight if he listens to Freddie’s instructions.

“It’s only Freddie who knows how to fight Mayweather and win,” Fortune said to Philboxing, “So, Manny should listen to the letter all the instructions of his chief trainer, not only during training period but, most importantly, given at the corner. It’s actually all a matter of listening and execution of what the instructions are.”

Fortune is optimistic that Manny will follow through Roach’s instructions and overcome the unbeaten Mayweather on fight night based on how Manny is handling himself in training camp.

“I’m happy to report though that for the past two months here in L.A., Manny has been all ears as far as obeying Freddie’s instructions and he’s been executing them well,” Fortune said, “Manny is unbeatable with the way he’s conducting himself in the camp.”

Roach has faced Mayweather once before when he trained Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007. Oscar would go on to lose a split decision however Freddie has maintained that he learned a lot about Mayweather that night and believes he can use that knowledge to get a win against Floyd this time around with Pacquiao.
Mayweather’s biggest asset in my opinion is his high boxing IQ, which enables him to make critical adjustments in-ring if he sees trends that are working against him. While Roach may have a great plan on paper, I suspect he may find on fight night that to implement a sound plan against Floyd for an entire fight is almost a near impossible task due to the way Floyd switches things up on the fly against his opponents.

Therefore despite Fortune’s insistence that Roach will be the key for Manny to topple Mayweather, it will likely come down to how well Manny himself reacts to the different ranges and movements Floyd will no doubt display to Manny when it’s just the two of them in the ring.
